ABOUT THE FOUNDER
Hi, welcome to Stylist School Online. My name is Michelle McFarlane, founder and the head coach and mentor here at Stylist School Online.
I initially created Stylist School Online because I was looking for personal shoppers and stylists for my own personal styling and image consulting company, The Shopping Friend.
I started as a personal shopper in New York City in 2002 when I was modeling and acting. It wasn’t until 2005, when I moved to Los Angeles, that I officially turned it into a full fledged personal shopping company called The Shopping Friend.
Over the last fourteen years, as a model and actress, I’ve worked with hundreds of professional fashion stylists for fashion shoots, television, and film. I have gleaned valuable tips from every single one of them. They were my Style School. And what an incredible style school it was.

I was modeling for Glamour Magazine in NYC when I was approached by one of the producers looking at my portfolio. She asked me who styled one of the shoots in my book. I said it was me.
She then asked me to style for her personally. My first client! She ended up referring me to her husband, then a friend, and a personal shopping business was born!
As The Shopping Friend grew I started hiring other personal shoppers and stylists. I thought it would be easy to find good stylists who were talented and had the skills and personality to work with all types of customers. It wasn’t.
After my first round of interviews of over 20 people I realized that I would have to train whoever we worked with so that The Shopping Friend would be able to offer the same reliable, consistent styling service across the board.
